Golf in Scotland

Any avid golfer must eventually make the pilgrimage to Scotland, the Home of Golf. As you tee off you stare down the same famous fairways that have been played for centuries . . . courses most have only seen on TV.

The great thing about golf in Scotland is that many of the very best courses are in tight pockets which allow golfers to travel less frequently and maximize their golfing time.

A sample customized golf itinerary highlights what we are talking about:

Four men, traveling with their wives, preferred to base out of cities and towns during their 10-day stay rather than staying in the countryside. While the men were going to hit the links most of the days, the women were only going to play a few times and also wanted to experience the non-golf side of Scotland, including visiting museums and walking the towns. They flew into Glasgow and were met at the airport by two luxury vehicles. One took the women for a day exploring Glasgow, the other van took the four golfers on a 30-minute drive to Royal Troon, 8-time site of the British Open. For 3 days they played other courses in the West and Southwest, including Turnberry. Then traveling north they headed to the Highlands via Glencoe and Loch Ness. The next two days they played Nairn and Royal Dornoch. For the final leg of the tour they headed to St. Andrews, and over the next few days they played the world famous courses of St. Andrews and even took the short drive to play Carnoustie. They spent their final night in Edinburgh celebrating their amazing journey before returning home the next morning.

Golf in Ireland

Some think Ireland was forged out of the Sea by the Golf Gods because of how conveniently laid out the country is for a perfect golf journey. The courses, like the hospitable Irish, are warm and welcoming.

The most common trip for years was simply to fly into Shannon and play the links courses of the Southwest such as Tralee, Ballybunion, Waterville, and Old Head. More and more golfers are now doing a full U-shaped itinerary, still landing in Shannon but playing the courses in that area such as Doonbeg and Lahinch before heading to Kerry to play the world-famous courses there and then heading East, playing such famous courses as Mt. Juliet, The K Club, Royal Dublin, and Portmarnock.

One of the greatest developments we have seen in recent years has been the growth in popularity of what we affectionately call the "Upside Down U." The benefits of traveling this route include less crowded courses and far less expensive green fees. Many of the courses on this route are actually the most popular courses for Irish and British golfers. Flying into Shannon, golfers can still play the famous courses of Clare, but they then head north through Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal. On this route they can play fantastic courses such as Connemera, Enniscrone, Carne and Ballyliffin. Golfers then head into Northern Ireland and play world famous championship courses like Portstewart, Royal Portrush and Royal County Down. Golfers can end the journey in Belfast or continue into Dublin and play the myriad of great courses in and around Ireland’s capital city.

The bottom line is that with the diversity of locales, courses, and hotels, there are infinite ways to personalize the perfect Irish golf experience. The more we know about the golfers, the better an experience we can create.

Golf in England and Wales

Some of the world’s best known courses are in England, and Wales has become one of the world’s hot golf destinations in the wake of Celtic Manor being named the site of the 2010 Ryder Cup.

From East Anglia to Greater London and Liverpool to Devon, there are literally hundreds of golf clubs to choose from in England. Many of our golf bookings in England are not even itineraries, but people working or touring in London, looking for a quick break outside the city to play a round of golf.

It is remarkable how popular Wales has become as an international golf destination in 2007. Courses such as Aberdovey and Conwy are just two examples of great golf in Wales.
